The Department of Medicine is committed to increasing the recruitment, retention and advancement of faculty, fellows and residents from groups under-represented in medicine, as well as to promote an inclusive environment across the department. As part of this commitment, two new positions have been created to help achieve these goals.
Dr. Bessie Young has been appointed as Associate Chair for Diversity and Inclusion.
Dr. Young is a professor of medicine in the Division of Nephrology and Chief of Nephrology at the VA Puget Sound Health Care System. She earned both her MD and MPH from the University of Washington. Her research focuses on racial disparities and genetic factors predicting outcomes of patients with kidney disease, education regarding access to transplantation and dialysis for minorities, and access to kidney disease care in rural areas. She is committed to diversity efforts in the department, school, University, and on local, regional and national levels. She is an active member of the department Diversity Council, recently becoming co-chair.
Dr. Young has led an exemplary career with many accomplishments.
Congratulations Dr. Young!
