Observations

Welcome to UW Nephrology

Our program focuses on offering high-quality education and patient care in a public hospital setting. We emphasize close collegial relationships between attending physicians, fellows, residents, and staff.

Medical school students, potential medical school students seeking observation hours or shadowing experience, and medical professionals (e.g., physicians, ARNP, PA, nurse, medic) may request a clinical observership in Nephrology inpatient or outpatient settings at the University of Washington.

Pre-med students, please visit the School of Medicine website for advice on clinical experiences and shadowing.

Clinical/Research Observations

  • Occur only at UW Medical Center (clinical only) or Harborview Medical Center (clinical or research)
  • Require a sponsoring physician with active privileges at the hosting site.

  • Require approval through the respective Medical Director’s Office

  • Does not include hands-on patient care

  • Available for inpatient or outpatient Nephrology observation

  • Allowable for up to 3 days per calendar year (for HMC observations); no time limit for UWMC observations

  • Available to pre-medical students who are at least 16 years old (for UWMC observations) and at least 18 years old (for HMC observations)

  • IMGs not enrolled in a medical school or residency program are not allowed to observe

Research Visits

Unlike clinical observership, the VISIT program coordinates research-only visits. Individuals seeking a research appointment must have a faculty sponsor and apply through the University of Washington VISIT program.

Application Process

Please review the following documents for detailed requirements:

Carefully review and attach all required documentation, including vaccination records

  • Applicants are responsible for identifying an attending-level nephrologist who is willing to host them in inpatient or outpatient settings at UWMC or Harborview, and for identifying specific days for observation (see hospital policies above)

  • Requests require at least 1 month's advance notice and are subject to capacity and institutional approval.

  • Once an attending has agreed to have you observe and a schedule and setting have been confirmed, they will put you in touch with the Nephrology Education Programs Manager, who will help facilitate your observation application.

  • Complete the application and submit it to the Nephrology Education Programs Manager for review and signatures. They will submit the application to the Medical Director’s Office on your behalf.

  • If approved, you will receive an official approval email from the Medical Director’s Office. The Nephrology Education Programs Manager will provide next steps, including your schedule, details for obtaining an “observer” hospital badge, and other logistical information.
